“With every mile we travel, I get a stronger and stronger sense that this is exactly what He has planned.”

Seeing the dejection painted on Joseph’s face, Daniel walked around the comer and then came back to them. “Listen, I know it probably isn’t what you’d planned, but I have a stable in the back, and you can stay there free of charge.”

Joseph searched Mary’s face and found a strangely intuitive smile. “That will be fine, I guess,” Joseph replied.

As Daniel led them to the stable, he stopped and said, “You know, I can hardly believe I offered you this place. I hadn’t planned on anyone staying here tonight—especially someone who is going to have a baby—but oddly enough, it feels that this is the way it’s supposed to be.” The innkeeper stepped into the stable and began sweeping up a great mound of hay with his legs. Mary was touched as she noticed Daniel’s breathing growing heavier from what for him was an enormous effort. When he had done all he could to prepare her bed, he turned to Mary and said, “I hope you sleep well, dear child. Do not hesitate to call on me for anything you need. May God bless you.”
